Galactus Hits Cyberspace
Written by James Pedrick, Web Master of Silver Surfer Website
The cosmic characters of the Marvel Universe seem to be hurting. With last year's cancellation of the Silver Surfer and an unsuccessful Warlock mini-series, Marvel Comics is left with no title dedicated to their cosmic characters. But a certain Devourer of Worlds seems to be just as popular and just as fascinating as ever. Galactus, everyone's favorite planet eater, has been popping up all over the place. After starring in a DC cross-over between Superman and the Fantastic Four, the Big G guest-starred in a storyline with Wolverine and a storyline with the X-Men. Remarkably, the comics gave respect to the power of Galactus in both appearances. Now, Galactus is starring in his own 6-issue mini-series, written by Louise Simonson with art by John Buscema and Jon J. Muth. The mini-series will guest-star the Silver Surfer, Fantastic Four, and Avengers, as well as a new herald to Galactus. Reportedly, it will also have strong implications on the entire Marvel Universe. And the sales could be very important on deciding the future of the Cosmic Powers branch of the Marvel Universe.
According to writer Louise Simonson, the number-crunchers at Marvel Comics were reluctant at giving the comic character his own mini-series because of the Silver Surfer title's poor sales, despite the mini-series having popular guest stars. So, many cosmic fans are interesting and promoting the mini-series as best they can.
Enter Galactus: The Web Page. In order to pump up the momentum for the new mini-series, the Silver Surfer Website constructed a new site dedicated to the Devourer of Worlds. The site tries to get visitors interested in the character, with profiles and pictures of Galactus and his heralds, as well as previews and interviews on the new mini-series and an interactive message board. But another aspect of the site is fan fiction. Galactus not new to the world of Cyberspace fan fiction. He has appeared in stories by MV1 and was recently the star of a mini-series event at the 2099 UG Fan Fiction Group.
The Silver Surfer Website is trying to build up enthusiasm for the mini-series and the characters by publishing its own fan fiction, based on the characters. On Galactus: The Web Page, they offer links to the following fan fiction, all published by the Silver Surfer Website's Cosmic Powers Fan Fiction Group:
Silver Surfer: Playing God by Rick Lundeen - This story, accompanied by original artwork, takes place in the future, when the Silver Surfer adopts another planet as his own, only for it to be found by the Devourer of Worlds and his new herald.
Silver Surfer: Encounters by Renee Langan - The Silver Surfer finds himself caught between a battle between two cosmic entities, Galactus and a female opposite of his from another universe, who has a herald who looks similar to his formal companion, Nova. Now, the Silver Surfer must stop the two cosmic beings from destroying both their universes in a cosmic war.
Silver Surfer: Volume 1 Issues #19-29 by Matt Hamilton (no relation to MV1 title) - In this cosmic storyline, taking place directly after issue #18 of the first volume, the Silver Surfer attempts once again to escape the barriers of earth, placed by Galactus. When he makes a deal with an unlikely ally, he puts his former master and the entire universe at risk. Guest-starring the X-Men, Magneto, Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, and Dr. Doom. It also features a brand new herald of Galactus!
Firelord: Destinies Embrace by Jeff "Funk" - In this cosmic adventure, starring Firelord, the heralds of Galactus find themselves gathering together to rescue their former master, Galactus, who is trapped in another dimension.
Galactus/Star Wars by Mike O'Brian - This newest addition is a cross-over between Marvel's Devourer of World and the characters from Star Wars. What happens when Galactus takes on Darth Vader as his new herald? And can this partnership lead to an even greater, more cosmic union? (This is actually a good crossover!)
