HEROES: Tell us a little about yourself in 30 words or less.
Jason Snyder: I guess I'd describe myself as the kind of person who loves to get involved. I've always enjoyed group work and talking to many people. I'm down-to-earth and have always considered myself a people person. Writing has been an important part of who I am.
H: How did you find MV1?
JS: I stumbled upon it as one of the links(Avengers Assemble) from Alvaro's Avengers Message Board.
H: Before you came along, Ka-Zar had very few appearances in MV1, explain your take on the character.
JS: To me, Ka-Zar had previously been a boring, third-rate character. He came off as a cheap Tarzan wannabe, but I really saw something in him when Mark Waid wrote him in the last Marvel series. Ka-Zar became a strong character who would do anything for his wife and son. He was basically the everyday married man, but who also happened to be Lord of the Savage Land and a very capable leader. Joining him was his "brother" in soul, Zabu, the sabretooth tiger.
H: Can you tell us a little bit about your limited series "Ka-Zar Trial and Error?"
JS: This series takes off from the Ka-Zar arc recently in Marvel Premiere. At the end, Dr. Ron Jenkins, the man responsible for caring for Shanna after she had been seriously injured by Parnival, decided to press charges against Ka-Zar because he believed he had reasonable suspicion that Ka-Zar was the one who caused her injuries, thereby accusing him of spousal abuse. I guess he felt it was his responsibility as a medical authority to see a potential abuser brought to justice. This series will take Ka-Zar to trial and focus on the American criminal justice system, analyzing how accurate it really is. Furthermore, there will be a certain character, who I'm not at liberty to say, who will be in contact with Dr. Jenkins because he/she has a personal interest in Ka-Zar's fate. I can promise that the trial won't go smoothly though. And don't worry, this won't turn into an O.J. Simpson three-ring circus. =)
H: There are many rumors that Randy Lander has chosen you to Co-write Web of Spider Man. Can you tell us a little bit about it?
JS: Well, basically, Randy was looking for a co-writer for that book and I showed interest. I'm not aware if anyone else had offered to take the position or not, but I ended up with the job anyway. My job, from what I know, is to do the primary scripting over Randy's plots, even adding some feedback to the plots as well. So far, Randy and I have been collaborating over e-mail, throwing the final details into his initial plots. I believe my first issue will be #144 and going through to the end, which is #152. I can promise you, though, that we'll be throwing out some big-time surprises.
I could go on and do what the professional writers usually say and promise that the status quo will be shaken up and that we'll take Spidey to places he's never been. Quite frankly, though, Spidey has never needed a shake up in the status quo. We're just basically out to tell the best stories that we can and entertain. We're not getting paid for this; it's all for fun, which I'm eagerly looking forward to. Randy is a great influence and very professional and I'm hoping to do justice to his plots.
H: Are there any books on MV1 that you want to get a chance to write?
JS: Well, every book on the MV1 is a great read and has made me interested in all of them. I know I'd love to get a chance to write an ongoing Ka-Zar title. Other than that, titles that I'd like to write that already exist would be Daredevil, Black Panther, or Moon Knight. I've always had a thing about writing the solo characters because they seem more real and interesting to me. Sometimes it's hard to do character development with the big teams like the Avengers or X-Men.
Characters that I'd love to write in an ongoing book who don't have an existing one(Besides the aforementioned Ka-Zar) would probably be the Hulk and most of all, Spider-Woman. In particular, I'd love to use Julia Carpenter. She's always been my favorite version. I'm not sure how much of a possibility that would be since I believe she's being used over in Force Works, but who knows?
