The New Faces of MV1: Jason Kenney

Jason Snyder - Sam Everett - Francisco Araujo da Costa
Shawn Connolly - Al Ritter - Paulo Costa

HEROES: Tell us a little about yourself in 30 words or less.

Jason Kenney: Oh, geez, 30 words or less, eh? I hate these questions. Um ... a nice guy who got into fanfic to get out of writers block on my book. It hasn't worked.

H: How did you find MV1?

JK: I'm not sure really. I got into fanfic in October/November, '98 and wanted to find a group of some sort, just folks who were willing to do continuing series in continuity with each other. I hit CFAN and looked and looked and looked, and I think I found it there. I think.

H: For those who don't know, tell us a little bit about what "MV1 Saga" is all about.

JK: "MV1 Saga" is pretty much "Marvels" for MV1. Josh Anderson is Phil Sheldon's grandson and is following in his footsteps as a reporter covering the Marvels. Pretty much I'm chronicalizing MV1 from the common man's point of view.

H: What can we expect from MV1 Saga in the future?

JK: Well, right now MV1 Saga's future is up in the air. There's the possibility of Josh Anderson appearing in Year 5 sometime soon and I'd like to try and use him in my Captain America run in some way, just to show him further down the road. I'm not too sure how long the regular series will last, though i'm thinking of it just being a 13 part maxi-series at first, covering MV1 Year One. I'd like to do mini-series here and there in continuity to cover big events. I'd love to let others take shots at writing the mini's, just to see how others work this. I'd even let folks write the Year One stories. Saga has the ability to let readers see the writer's mind work because it's the common man look. The story shows how we'd see and interpret these events. I mean, you see a lot of me in MV1 Saga, I think, not because Josh is practically me, but because it's my interpretation of these events others created. It's what I walked away with from these stories. It's sort of feedback in a literary form.

H: Recently with all the dibs cleared you were given one of MV1's most popular books, "Captain America." Tell us your talk on the character, and what we can expect to see in your run.

JK: My "talk on the character?" Hmm...well, I'm pretty excited about getting a shot at Cap. I mean, he was one of the first three comics I ever owned, a Captain America, an Iron Man, and a X-Men. My mom was very much against comics, so the only ones I ever got were what I either got as gifts or from friends. They're all long gone, but Cap was my hero. Now that I've got him, I don't know what to do with him. I mean, initially, I got this rush and I still have it, but after a while the dread set in. I've got to write a Captain America run. I mean, THE Captain America. And I've got big shoes to fill, Dave, Matt, Mark, those are tough acts to follow. I want to make my mark here.

What you'll see from my run, well, not too sure, yet. Not completely set in stone, at least. I had an initial idea for near the end of my run that I tossed to the editors (it was huge, and I mean huge) but it was too big so I've watered it down a bit, but I have big plans near the end. My whole run will have subtle sub-plots running up to my final 4 or 5 issue arc. But, my first arc is looking to take Cap to Genosha and maybe a run in with Deadpool. Ultimately I want to get into Cap's head. I'm not primarily a superhero writer. I'm more of a psychological type. Yeah, sure the fisticuffs are great and all, but I want a more human look at this stuff (thus MV1 Saga's basis). So, you can expect a lot of that. More too, but I'm either not sure or not wanting to tell just yet.....

H: Are there any books on MV1 that you want to get a chance to write?

JK: Oh, man, loads. Iron Man, Fantastic Four, Daredevil, X-Men, Punisher, I'm a Marvelite so any and everything is fair game. Ideally, I'd love a shot at Iron Man and X-Men, especially X-Men. I've always been a huge X-Men fan. Well, until recently (damn Marvel editors having to ruin everything). I'd love to try a Deadpool series, but I'm not funny enough. I have an original idea running around my head about an end of the world story, sort of a mix between Earth X and Revelations. But, I've got to be careful because I've taken on a bit too much recently. I'm perfectly happy with what I have right now.
