If you ask me, all our "progess" has done is isolate us. Sure, you can talk about our advances in medicine, our ability to engineer things that allowed men to walk on the moon. There are things to make life easier, machines to do the more arduous tasks, take the drudgery out of life and give us a longer life span. We can travel just about anywhere, or communicate thoughts, ideas or a business transaction on a global scale from our computers at home. Heck, I met my husband on the net! But we have not evolved. Our response to our environment has been hostile and exploitative, often in the extreme. People in this industrial age are more frequently depressed, homeless and uncared for, stressed and diseased, often unable to merely cope. True good manners and common decency are a thing of the past -- all but gone. There is a wave of crime unlike any other in the history of this planet that does not show signs of stopping. Children are taking guns to school or to social occaisions and shooting at other children. We are free from depending on anyone else for our survival but what we gain from independence is negligible and does not balance out what we as a species have lost by not keeping it simple and near our spiritual center.
