| "Pimpinela Extra", "El Libro de Pigüí", August 1959, published by Editorial Codex of Buenos Aires. From the late fifties to the middle sixties, "Pimpinela" began to publish, besides the regular magazine, a series of "Libros de..." ("Books of..."), which centered around a given topic or character, and carried mainly reprints from old issues of the regular "Pimpinela". It had more pages than the reg, and a larger size (although the reg itselg increased its size also in its final stages), all printed in black an white, except for the covers. Since these "Extra" books were for some reason labeled "Sello Blanco" ("White Seal"), the background of covers was not the usual yellow, but white instead. This particular issue carried the following stories: "Viaje al centro de la Tierra" ("A journey to the center of the Earth"), by Jules Verne, a reprint, competently drawn by Carlos Clémen, the same who worked for the "Supertorieta" comic books. (About him, there's a curious fact: he had a Cartoonist school in Buenos Aires, which had also lessons by mail. One of his alumni was no other than the famous Al Williamson -of E.C. and "Flash Gordon" fame-, who lived in Bogotá, Colombia, in his youth). "Pigüí y su pandilla" ("The Little Wise Guys") starred in two stories, besides appearing in the cover; then there were two European comics, of anonymous authors, and a Western, "Tex, el Justiciero", perhaps from the Marvel line. An enjoyable book, if not among the best in its class. I selected it because its cover is quite well preserved, while the others I have are in bad shape, even if their contents may be superior in quality. | ||
