"Supertorieta"Nº22,
21 February 1955, published by Publicaciones Universales, S.R.L., of Buenos
Aires. Now fully dedicated to "futuristic" stories, "Supertorieta" achieved
its greatest success, although inner color pages were dropped, in order
to keep the price of the mag accessible to mass audience. The stuff featured
was first-class, despite the use of re-arranging panels to make stories
fit into less pages than the original ones. Among the stories in this issue
were "Speed Carter", excellently drawn by Joe Maneely, "Supermarciano",
the Argentine version of "Lars of Mars", at this stage written by Aldo
Cammarota and drawn by Carlos Clémen, who was also responsible for
the cover. ("Lars" had originally been a Fawcett character, probably taken
by Argentinians after Fawcett closed its line of comics, following the
famous trial of "Superman vs. Captain Marvel", which Fawcett settled by
discontinuing all its comic magazines. Also featured was "Buster Crabbe",
"Mysta" (a character of "Planet Comics" magazine fame), and "Más
allá del sol", which was no less than the Sunday pages of the syndicated
"Twin Earths" strip, masterly done by Aldon Mc Williams. Other issues also
brought "Vida en Otros Mundos" (or "Life in Other Planets"), a fake-documentary
section baroquely drawn by Murphy Anderson, in a style far more powerful,
in my humble opinion, than most of his -also excellent- later work for
DC Comics. A highly-collectible magazine, and quite scarce at the present
moment... My next contribution will be "Hora Cero" semanal, a great magazine,
much remembered by veteran aficionados.
