Cuentos de Brujas, December, 1952, Nº15

This was the Mexican version of "Witches Tales" Nº8 (Harvey Comics, April 1952); this edition in Spanish is from December 1952, and the publiser is Editora de Periódicos "La Prensa", México, D.F. ("Editora" or "Editorial" in Spanish means "Publishing House"). The titles matched in this case, but it seemed to be a common practice of Mexican publishers to print diverse magazines from the same house and similar genre under one single title ("Cuentos de Brujas" included, besides the "Witches Tales" issues, some of "Chamber of Chills" and "Tomb of Darkness"), I suppose to be able to print a title which was originally bi-monthly in a monthly schedule. The excellent cover was drawn by the prolific Lee Elias, an artist very much of the Milton Caniff school, considered (I agree) one of the top comic guys of the '50s. He also illustrated "Juguetes de Terror" ("Toys of Terror") inside the same issue. I rate "Witches Tales" and the other magazines of the Harvey horror line among the best of their class, although unfairly underrated, being in fact more original and well-plotted than most, including the much-famed E.C. "Crypt" tales. They also had the tallents of a bunch of comic geniuses of illustration, ike Bob Powell, Howard Nostrand and others.
