For the second place,
I chose a sample taken from one of the best SF comic books of the classic
period, regretfully of a very short run: the page is the splash for "Triunfo
sobre el Terror" ("Triumph over Terror"), by Ace Artist Alex Toth, printed
in "Mundos Fantásticos" Nº1, a comic book published in Mexico
by Editorial Proteo, as the Spanish version of "Fantastic Worlds", from
Better/Standard Publications. This comic book -and this first story of
the first issue in particular- introduced the SF genre to comic readers...
In my opinion, and despite its awfully short run, this magazine presented
top-quality stuff, both in art and scripts, superior in some ways even
to the much-celebrated E.C.'s "Weird Science" and "Weird Fantasy", for,
while these had a "literary" bent, the Better/Standard stuff got a "pulp"
flavor that made the books truly unique. The first-class art of Toth and
his staff was a powerful asset, indeed, well paired by the suspenseful,
dinamic scripts.
