To show
which I consider among the best of one of the most gifted classic comic
book artists, I've chosen this example of his character "Tor", a story
which took place "1.000.000 Years B.C.". The title was published in Mexico
as "El Despertar del Mundo" (you can see some covers elsewhere in this
site), or "The World Awakes" -a name far more attractive than the original
one, in my humble opinion. Kubert's style was at its most enthusiastic
and dynamic stage, and he produced masterful secuencial art, beautiful
anatomic renderings and realistic beasts. Some readers, however, found
the sight of human beings pitted against dinosaurs outrageous, considering
the 70.000.000 years span Science places between them... Artist Kubert
and scriptwriter Norman Maurer made their point, in a page in which they
addressed the readers directly, affirming that "some semblance of Man COULD
have existed at the time of slow extinction of the giant reptiles"... Nevertheless,
in further stories they began to use saber-tooth tigers and wild giant
wolves instead. Most of fans, anyway (me among them) gleefully left Paleontology
behind and enojoyed Kubert & Maurer's fantasies for what they were
worth: first-class entertainment! This is page 2 from the first story of
issue #4 (28 February 1955), regretfully the last of the Spanish version
run. While one can find more striking panels in previous issues, I took
this one for it is unbound, and therefore easier to place on the scanner
screen with no distortion of the image.
