From
"El Despertar del Mundo" Nº 2 (Editora de Periódicos "La Prensa",
México, 31 December 1954), I chose this example of one of Joe Kubert's
double-spread or "Panelrama", as he called them. For practical reasons,
though, the two-page splash is taken from a small size reprint published
in 1977 by Organización Editorial Novaro, a rival house which reprinted
all the DC stuff. In fact, by then the "Tor" character belonged to DC and
Kubert was working for that company. A curious detail is the first page
of this new comic book, which reproduced the first page of the original
"Tor" first issue, in which Joe Kubert and the scripwriter, Norman Maurer,
introduced the magazine to readers. In the reprint, Kubert's image is changed,
sporting glasses and a beard to look 23 years older, while Maurer simple
vanished, not being involved in the business any more. Slight differences
in color and captions (the lettering is no longer hand-made, and the text
is simplified) do not spoil the striking quality of Kubert's art, his superb
rendering of male and female shapes, nor the dramatic layout, all elements
confirming his status of a classic master of the medium. The title of the
story is gone also, but it was "El Valle Negro" ("The Black Valley"), as
stated on the original edition.
