From "Enigmas
de Ultratumba" Nº1, published in Mexico by Editorial Proteo (it's
a version of one horror comic book originally published in USA by Better
Publications), I selected this dynamic splash page from the opening story,
"El Espanto de Costa Bruta" ("The Dread of Costa Bruta"), which bears the
style of the great Alexander Toth, one of the hall-of-famers of the '50s.
His balance of dark shadows, the eerie appearance of the monsters in the
splash panel, and the vertical secuence at right, make an intriguing and
exciting opening for an adventure full of horrors and supernatural menace.
Toth would go even further in his development, to become one of the most
deservedly admired artists of all times. I'll show next another of his
pages from this same comic, in which his superb mastery at suggesting unknown
horrors is fully evident, although there is not a single demon in sight.
