From "Mundos Fantásticos"
Nº13, a publication of Editorial Proteo, of Mexico, dated 25 July
1955, I selected this superb example of the art of the much-neglected Nick
Cardy, one of the most notable artist in Golden and Silver Age comics.
He is perhaps best known
by his work for DC from the late '50s through the '60s; but I prefer his
previous work for other companies, although I had no idea of his true identity
until recent times, since he seldom or never was credited. Such is the
case of this particular story, "La Bailarina del Más Allá"
("The Dancer from the Beyond"), which originally appeared in "Adventures
into Darkness" Nº7, December 1952. The high quality of the art, near
"slick" illustration, strongly impressed me when I first encountered it,
being a boy with avidity for horror and SF stuff. While Cardy's panels
lack the "cartoony" charm of other horror artists of the period, they impress
with the excellence of forms and the beauty of the layouts. On the other
hand, the comic counts on a better-than-average script as a firm foundation
for its success. A real collector's piece, which I'm proud to have in my
shelves. |
