From "Cuentos
de Brujas" Nº13 (the Mexican version of Harvey's "Witches Tales",
published by Editora de Periódicos "La Prensa" in October 1952),
took page 4 from the first story, "La Liga de los Condenados" ("The League
of the Damned"), drawn with his usual punch by Bob Powell. The yarn deals
with a group of Satan worshipers, who began by taking their cult as a joke,
but found themselves caught in the unholy horrors of hell, having offended
the Lord of Evil with their disrespectful attitude. His revenge -and their
punishment- shall be terrible! The mastery of Powell is well shown here,
with daring visual angles, strong characterization, and powerful sense
of color. Panel 5 shows one of the Powell's trademarks, the "E.P.P." acronym
he used to place in his panels, often as gravestone legends. I used to
think these was a sort of monogram of himself, but after I learned his
first name was "Bob" (or "Stanley", for real), instead of "Paul", as I
wrongly believed he was called, it became a puzzle... Anybody knows better?
You're welcome! Whatever those letter stand for, the page is first-class,
as always happens with this gifted artist's work; so I'm proud of having
this one among my collector's items.
I have yet another "devilish"
page from Powell for this gallery. It's just beside this one. Just click
on the index thumbnail! |
