Marianne Nowottny CD "afraid of me"
Abaton Book Company is pleased to announce the release of the digitally mastered version of "afraid of me", Marianne Nowottny's debut CD.BUY CDHERE Ms. Nowottny is 17 years old and has entered her senior year at Sparta High School in Northwestern New Jersey. She has been described by Douglas Wolk in The Village Voice as "the first big pop surprise of the D.I.Y. Cd-R era". Kenneth Goldsmith of New York Press says "as fabulous and strange a debut as I've heard in some time."
After learning the rudiments of piano playing from her mother, Marianne Nowottny developed a style that references the scales and modes of eastern music, American popular song and electronic pop rock. Her arcane and complex lyrics and kaleidoscopic song structures are presented as a kind of avant-pop expressionism, aloof but still accessible: it is her own brand of "popmusic."
"afraid of me" was produced by playwright Lauri Bortz, proprietor of Abaton Book Company. The recording was engineered by Mark Dagley, a visual artist and founding member of the late 70s punk/dada group "girls." Digital mastering was done by Grammy nominee Steve Vavagiakis. This CD includes 10 songs not found on the original limited edition pressing. A generous 70 minutes of architecturally structured sound documents the astonishing musical and verbal awareness of this prolific young artist.

Abaton #004
On December 1st 1999, Abaton Book Company will release the first 45rpm recording of Marianne Nowottny. This record (ABATON #004) was pressed in white vinyl in a limited edition of 1000 copies. It contains two songs, Jesus-In-A-Jiffy, a quick and quaint recitation of the Christmas story with musical accompaniment and Sequin Serenade, a young woman's dream of the perfect New Year's celebration. ABATON #004 was produced by Lauri Bortz and engineered by Mark Dagley. Digital mastering was done by New York avant-garde musician /composer Elliott Sharp. The record's packaging includes a reproduction of an illumination from the medieval manuscript "The Belles Heures" and liner notes and graphics by Alexander Wilson.
As the final days of the year, century, and millenium come to a close, this record celebrates the passing of the historic, but also engages the present. Ms. Nowottny's humorous and convincing view of history, mythology, and sentimentality serve as vehicles for her unique musical expression.
