The Soldier's Guide to Courting

By Joe Strauser

There is more to courting than just hugging and smooching.  In most of our
society such a comment would not have to be made, but I am directing this article to
the common soldier.  Being one myself, I can attest for their rough edged behavior.
Don't get me wrong Gentlemen... There ain't nothing wrong with a little hugging and
smooching, but most "ladies" expect you to mind your manners.

1.  If you you find yourself impressed by a lady....  Take your time to learn about her.
After which, you may seek an introduction to her only through a mutual aquaitance.
2.  After such lady has recognized your existance...  Conduct your evenings of courtship
at seasonable hours.  Visit her occasionally and do not make yourself too common in her
presence.
3.  If you have found a lady with whom you have intent to marry....  It is considered
rude if you do not show the other lady aquaintances in your social caste their proper
attention.
4.  Don't be in any hurry to "pop the question" (This is an 1860's phrase)....  A note
or letter revealing your wishes to marry is much better then a blunt question.
5.  Gentlemen should not invite a lady to travel with them unless an engagement has
already been established.
6.  Do not be too "loving" during courtship....  According to Chesterfield's Complete
Rules of Ettiquette and The Usages of Society, "Hugging and kissing is perhaps all very
well when not too often or too fervently indulged in." (Sorry Pards!)
