FMS is a specific, chronic non-degenerative, non-progressive, noninflammatory, truly systemic pain condition.
The official definition requires that
1.Tender points must be present in all four quadrants of the body -- that is, the upper right and left and lower right and left parts of your body
2.You must have had wide-spread, more-or-less continuous pain for at least three months.
3.Tender points occur in pairs on various parts of the body. Because they occur in pairs, the pain is usually distributed equally on both sides of the body.

Trials and Tribulations of getting diagnoised
| |
|
It took my sister years to find a doctor who would listen to her about all the pain she was having, most just told her that it was all in her head, finally after 20 years of getting worse she found one. It just so happened my Mom was seeing a rheumatologist and she mentioned all the pain she and my sister were having and where the pain was located, he diagnoised my Mom with FMS and had my sister come in and see him.. she also had FMS.. even tho at the time the literature said that it wasnt hereditary the doctor was seeing more and more family members having fms. It took me longer to agree with them that i was also affected by fms...i just kept saying it was middle age until i could no longer go a day without pain.

There is alot the family can do to help, by keeping informed and helping the fms patient. The less stress on the fms patient the better.
