In a certain country, a Pencak Silat perguruan is also called a Pencak Silat institution, school or club. Pencak Silat perguruans as organizations have members consisting of the citizens of the countries where those perguruans exist. The total member of a perguruan may be only several persons or hundred thousands persons. The spreading area of a perguruan can possibly be in a small district only, but there is also such an area which covers a great part of its country. For example, Tapak Suci perguruan in Indonesia can be found in 26 of 27 provinces of this country today with the total number of around 1.500.000 active members.
There are some of the perguruans whose activities are independent and some others have the same activities with or follow the patterns of their principal perguruans. These principal perguruans are mostly located in the native countries of Pencak Silat. For example, Pamur perguruan in the Netherlands has its principal perguruan with the same name in Madura, Indonesia. There is also a principal perguruan, which is not located in the native country of Pencak Silat. For example, Bongkot perguruan in the Netherlands is the principal perguruan of the same name perguruan in Austria. Every Pencak Silat perguruan out of its native country has its origin. The authenticity of that origin authenticate the original of Pencak Silat taught in the respective perguruan.
In the native country of Pencak Silat, the arrangement of the perguruans is managed in various ways, such as in traditional way, modern way, semi- traditional way or semi-modern way. In other country out of the native country of Pencak Silat, the arrangement of the perguruans is managed in modern way. Great part of the Pencak Silat perguruans there are managed in the form of commercial courses, even they are registered at the Chamber of Commerce. Generally modern and semi-modern perguruans have written statutes and rules, while tradional and semi-traditional perguruans customarily have not such statutes or rules.
Basically, the purpose of the perguruans is to perpetuate, develop and socialize Pencak Silat and its values. The achievement of this goal is mainly obtained through educational efforts, and activities and promotion.
