Statement of Purpose
The goal of this ministry is to collect, reprint and provide the works of the first generation of Particular Baptist writers located in England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland and New England. This covered from 1633 to 1700. However, the first generation of writers were almost all gone by 1677. We have secured the materials of these old Particular Baptist writers up to 1700. These works are still mostly microfilm reprints.
We distinguish between the first and second generation of Particular Baptist writers. The first generation of writers were those centered around John Spilsbury and William Kiffen. The second generation were those centered around Benjamin Keach who reflected their differences by issuing the Westminster Confession of Faith with minor changes in 1677 and later in 1689, 1691 and 1701. For the differences between the First and Second London Confessions of Faith, see our introduction to the First London Confessions of Faith in Parallel Form, with Supporting Documents. The First London Confession was totally and originally Baptistic. The Second London Confession was Pedobaptist in origin, foundation and theory.
In addition to the many titles enclosed, we have also several hundred Pedobaptist works on microfilm which we have not copied and several additional General Baptist works, some are copied and some are not. These were secured because of their attacks upon the old Particular Baptist writers, their writings and their churches. Therefore, simply because these additional titles and authors are not included herein, does not mean we may not have some of them.
The Old Faith Baptist Library has been gathered during the past 35 years and reflects the contributions and helps of many different persons. In an effort to bring the old Baptist works into modern English, several of Christ's sheep have heard His call and responded to help in many unselfish ways. Now, there are only a few of these old works in modern English, but the list is growing and perhaps soon there will be many more.
The flock of sheep known as The Old Faith Baptist Church believes these old works will have a tremendous impact upon the entire being of each of God's sheep who reads and studies them with their Bible in hand. These old writers and their works taught that the Lord Jesus Christ converted the entire man and brought him into conformity, in this life, to His faith, order, worship and works. These old preachers have spoken again, afterover 300 years of silence. And yet, their messages are just as needful today as when they were first preached. Their works are just as impacting today as when first printed. Their doctrines are as conforming and Christ honoring today as they were then.
Some of the points these old writers maintained:
1. A total and complete end of the Old Covenant and the establishment of the New Covenant by Jesus Christ, which contains all that is necessary for His people in their entire being. They taught there were TWO covenants, one of the law, governing works, or temporal blessings: do and live in the natural world, and the other of grace, governing spiritual blessings: do, because you live in the unseen world by union with Jesus Christ. There are not TWO ADMINISTRATIONS OF ONE COVENANT, but TWO entirely different COVENANTS.
2. The Gospel system of Jesus Christ is visible, not invisible. Hence, there is no invisible church. I Corinthians 12:13 is baptism in water unto the gospel church by the Holy Spirit who administers baptism the same way Christ did, by means of the disciples or the gifted brethren, John 4:1-3.
3. All the saints of God have spiritual gifts that so enable them to speak for and make out Jesus Christ, some in a greater way, some in a lesser way. But it is lawful for each man to exercise the gift which God has given to him. The daughters of Zion also have a gift, a place and a work according to proper gospel order, to share Jesus Christ with others and help teach those who are lacking in their knowledge of Christ's faith, order, worship and works.
4. The succession of Jesus Christ's gospel system is a succession in and by faith which is administered and maintained by the Holy Spirit who uses ordinary and proper means to make this succession visible. Therefore, the ordinances, all of them, are spiritual ordinances and seals of the everlasting Covenant. Christ has given to His churches of Saints the visible administrations of this covenant with all its seals. The matter of a church is saints who are in both an invisible and visible union with Jesus Christ. The church is, because the saints are, and not, the saints are because the church is. But, the saints are because Jesus Christ is. Note, the saints are not proper matter because of their being in the church. From Christ Jesus the saints have all that is necessary to be a saint. They are the matter of a church of saints. Jesus Christ brings His people into His government which His Holy Spirit has maintained since His first coming in the flesh and will continue to maintain until He comes again. This maintenance is a part of the loving Father's promise to His dying Son, Jesus Christ, and the grieving Widow, the church, as found in Isaiah 53 and 54.
5. The gospel succession of Jesus Christ, as maintained by the Holy Spirit, includes the succession of the true gospel or very word the Father gave to Jesus Christ, the true Ordinances, the very same ordinances the Father sent into the world for Jesus Christ, and the true Holy Spirit, the very same Holy Spirit the Father placed upon Jesus Christ and His disciples at their baptism. Therefore, succession is more than simply the succession of an organization, or church succession, it is the succession of the very same word placed IN Christ's mouth and preached by Christ, the very same ordinances He practiced and the very same Spirit Who empowered and sealed Him, and the very same type or kind of church He gathered and the Holy Spirit maintains, seals and comforts.
6. The older Particular Baptists believed that when King Jesus came to and subdued His elect in conversion, He drove out all other kings and their laws, including Satan and his dominion, sin and its reigning power, and the law of sin and death, called by some, the Moral Law or the Law of Moses. King Jesus, coming in conversion to His sheep, comes as their only King and subdues them and then also establishes Himself as their only High Priest and their only Prophet. Therefore, as their Priest, He makes His people holy, and as their Prophet, He teaches them so as to make them zealous of good works because of their union with Him Who is holy and full of good works. He places His own NEW LAWS WITHIN THEIR HEARTS, writing them upon their hearts of flesh rather than tables of stone.
Dear and kind reader, if you desire to move on into the higher Christian life and experience the greater joy and happiness of being in the land of Christ and having communion with Him in His watered garden, and walk with Him among His trees and eat of His fruit and drink of His wine, and hear the voice of His dove speaking, then perhaps you too shall be blessed in your reading and studying of these old Particular Baptist writers.
Perhaps you too, will hear "sweet Jesus unto you say, come thou with me away!"

PARTICULAR BAPTIST WRITERS
In this listing we have made no attempt to place these writers in proper groups. Among the Particular Baptists you will find renegade Baptists, disowned by the churches because of taking pay from the civil magistrate as did Richard Harrision and Christopher Blackwood, open membership men such as Henry Jessey, John Tombes and John Bunyan, the associated Baptists who were the large majority, and the independent churches as was John Gosnold.
We have not identified the writers of the seven churches of London nor the associated or independent churches and ministers outside of London and elsewhere in the British Empire. These writers are the authors, whom we have been able to identify, locate and secure, with their known works. There are additional works by these authors which we have not listed as yet. We shall list them as we are able. Also, most of these old works are in hand. There are about 15 works which we have not been able to locate yet anywhere in the English speaking world. These we have noted with the word "(lost)". We continue to look.
