The Past: Before 1950

Only a few historic monuments have been preserved in Kuwait as modernization continues to take its toll on the old urban environment and historic buildings. A few mosques and diwanias (social meeting houses) have been saved from demolition, and many have been replaced with new structures, reflecting the rapid changes in the recent history of the state.  Integrated, delicate and coherent hierarchies of form and space, monumentality and the quotidian resulted. They have largely been destroyed - blown apart by Modern Movement with its reverence for object buildings, functional separation and new forms of structure and construction

Traditional Houses

The harsh natural environment encouraged the development of innovative architectural ideas to help produce an acceptable livable environment inside the traditional houses. The courtyard was one of the traditional solutions that provided a shaded and private space inside the house. It also allowed air circulation inside the house. Courtyard house closed from the outside and open to the inside courtyard; called alhoush.
