Melanie's "Finished" Projects...

Please keep in mind that the links within the text below will send you to a page of photos. If your browser does not support images you will get nothing out of those pages. I do encourage you to read the descriptions anyway.

Kitchen/Pantry Dome

The kitchen/pantry scene was the very first miniature project I ever did. It is inside an acrylic dome. There is a tall shelf unit in the center which seperates the scene into the two different rooms. In the kitchen there is a coalburning stove where breakfast is in the process of being prepared. There are various kitchen accessories and utensils hanging on the wall, and a chair next to the stove holds "Peter Rabbit" and the Bible which were left behind when Mama shooed Papa and baby out of the kitchen so she could cook. Baby dropped her teddy next to the chair. I plan to have a cat curled up under the stove someday, but I haven't found the perfect one yet. A wooden icebox straddles the wall between the two rooms. Above it, herbs are hung on the wall to dry. In the pantry there are all kinds of cans. There is also a basket of eggs, a jar of honey, home canned peas and pickled eggs. Above the food items, the dishes, serving pieces, linens, utensils and Papa's shaving tools sit. There is a cozy braided rug on the floor as well as a washboard and milkcan.

The Haunted House

The haunted house was a garage sale find. I paid $2 for a small house that was put together very poorly and was never finished. I painted it, added shingles to the roof, added a fireplace and chimney and weathered the whole thing. Inside there is yellowing, dusty, peeling wallpaper. Upstairs there is a small bathroom with a rusty, dirty, long unused clawfoot tub and sink. On the wall above the sink is a medicine chest with a broken mirror. Next to the bathroom is a small room with a few scattered pieces of furniture including a cradle. The ghost of a small girl stands quietly in the center of this room. Downstairs there are more scattered furniture pieces, some covered with sheets. The front door is partially open and some of the windows are broken. Hanging above the fireplace is a large broken mirror in a gold frame. The ghost of a young woman sits in a chair gazing at the empty fireplace.

La Casita

The "casita" was a NAME State Day project done a few years ago in San Diego. It is a small building with a small and sparsely landscaped front yard. Rather than making it a house, I chose to make it the main room of an artists' colony. Inside there is sparse Southwestern and Mission style furniture. There are various indian and modern style pottery pieces around the room. There are cochina dolls, Native American baskets, Southwestern rugs, and other Southwestern style decorations. On the inside front wall I have painted little murals. A young woman sits on a Mission style bench where she was reading before she set her book down to greet another woman who is bringing in a Santa Clara style pot she has recently finished. The side door leads to a patio where there are comfortable wicker seats, a fountain, a small adobe firepot, and of course more pottery. Growing along the top of the patio are vines with white flowers, and hanging below these are a pair of papier mache birds and a lantern.

The Fairies

The fairies are in a small cube. They were made out of Sculpey by myself. Their hair is unravelled bunka and their wings are real butterfly wings which I was lucky enough to find on my sidewalk. I did not hurt any butterflies in the making of this scene. Both figures are naked. Mom is pregnant and sits on a log. Her son is standing next to her and they are having a loving chat about the baby that will be coming soon.
