My Biography
I still can't think of anything interesting to put here, so I'll answer a few questions that people have asked or e-mailed me.
Q: Why is your web email address "g_knightley@hotmail.com"?
A: I took the name "g_knightley" after Mr. Knightley (George that is), a character in Emma, my favourite Jane Austen book. (And for the record, my ideal Mr. Knightley is Jeremy Northam's portrayal of the character in the 1996 film Emma, released by Miramax Pictures.) The hotmail account is because it's free! (What can I say? I'm cheap.)
Q: How long have you been a Jeremy Northam fanatic?
A: I've been a fan of Jeremy's since seeing him in Emma. Since then, I've seen The Winslow Boy, Gloria, Mimic, Amistad, The Tribe, The Net, Carrington, A Fatal Inversion, A Village Affair, Piece of Cake, Poriot Mysteries: Dead Man's Mirror, and Wuthering Heights (though not in that order). I also own all but one of the poetry tapes he narrates for Penguin UK and the Emma audiobook.
Q: Did you really receive a letter from Jeremy?
A: Yes. It's the silliest thing really. I saw him on "The Vibe," a horrible, now-cancelled, evening talk show. He looked miserable, the other guests (namely James Brown) were cutting into his time, and the host (Chris Spencer) was an idiot. I wrote him a short, three or four line note telling him that his appearance wasn't too bad and sent it off to his publicist. (Actually, I just bought new correspondence cards at South Coast Plaza Mall in Costa Mesa, CA earlier that day and I wanted an excuse to break them in.) To my absolute shock, he wrote me back a few weeks later. I had never believed that he would ever see my note, let alone answer it! I still can't believe it!
Q: Have you ever met Jeremy in person?
A: No. (Darn it.) But hope springs eternal...
Q: How long have you been a Joshua Bell fanatic?
A: I've admired his violin playing for several years now, but it wasn't until I saw him perform live at his Toledo, OH performance on March 14, 1998 that my admiration kicked into high gear. The concert was breathtaking and I left the performance floating on air. Since the Toledo performance, I saw a recital of his in Fairfax, VA and a concert with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in Baltimore, MD. Both were just as spectacular.
Q: Do you admire his performance or his looks?
A: No really, I am a fan of his music. Of course the fact that he is very handsome doesn't hurt, but first and foremost, I love his music. On the other hand, I am not sure my grandmother can make the same claim. Of course she's 85 years old and partially deaf but has great eyesight, so perhaps that's why she admires his looks over his playing. (Did I mention that my grandmother has great taste?)
Q: Have you ever met Joshua in person?
A: YES!!!! I went to his March 13, 1999 concert in Baltimore and was able to meet him. Under normal circumstances, I am a reasonably self confident and outgoing person, but upon meeting him I became shy and tongue tied. (Go figure.) However, he was very kind and gracious as well as friendly.
Q: Do you have Joshua's autograph?
A: Yes! (See entry above.) When I get a chance to get it scanned in, I will. It is written on the back of my Red Violin CD, so I'm not sure how well it will show up.
Q: Do you know how to get his autograph?
A: I haven't the foggiest notion, though if anyone comes up with a reliable way, please let me know. Every now and then, he does CD signings at his concerts and some people have been able to get his autograph through his publicist.
Q: Do you play the violin?
A: No. In truth, I know little about how to play the instrument. Instead played the flute for six years when I was younger until I had braces put on. Suddenly the braces wiped at least five years off of my sound quality, so I gave up. I still miss it though (although on the positive side, I do have relatively straight teeth).
Q: What made you start this site?
A: I looked around the internet and despaired over the lack of information on two of my favourite artists, Jeremy Northam and Joshua Bell, so I thought I'd add my two cents.
Thanks for reading my ramblings...
