Past Works
Happy, Texas - October 1999
Jeremy plays Harry, an escaped convict who along with Wayne, steals a Winnebago and enters Happy, Texas, where the real owners of the vehicle were expected. The convicts soon learn that the town believes they are a gay couple who the town hired to coach their children to enter a beauty pageant. Good news - Jeremy's hilarious performance shows he has a real talent for comedy. Bad news - The U.S. Box office receipts didn't exactly set the world on fire.
An Ideal Husband - July 1999
This is the film version of the Oscar Wilde play of the same name. Jeremy plays Sir Robert Chiltern, a man rising in Parliment and power who is being blackmailed by a woman seeking the attention and affections of his close friend, Lord Goring (Rupert Everett). Good news - It's an amusing movie, well worth renting. Bad news - Arriving in the theatres so close on the heels of The Winslow Boy, the movie can't help but suffer by comparison.
The Winslow Boy - May 1999
This is a remake of a 1940's film by the same name and also stars Nigel Hawthorne, Gemma Jones, and Rebecca Pidgeon. This is by far his best work since Emma. This screen adaptation of a play which was based on a true case. It stars Jeremy as Sir Robert Morton, a barrister whom Mr. Winslow (Nigel Hawthorne) tries to get to represent his 14 year old son in court to prove the boy's innocence from the charge that the boy stole a 5 shilling postal order. Good news - Stunning performance by all except Pidgeon. Bad news - Not well known.
Gloria - January 1999
This is a remake of the 1970 film by the same name and stars Sharon Stone and George C. Scott. It is an utterly forgettable movie in which Jeremy plays a New York City mobster named Kevin who's girlfriend (Sharon Stone) rescues a small child that he is about to have killed. Jeremy puts on an accent that vacillates between being a New Yorker (though from which burrough I haven't the foggiest) and Irish. Truly a dreadful movie and one of his less than stellar performances. Good news - The publicity hounds barely mentioned him in the press when promoting the movie. Bad news - He was actually in this embarassing flop.
The Tribe - 1998 (TV)
Originally made right after Emma, this made-for-the-silver-screen film couldn't find a distributor for two years before being shown on television on BBC2 in England. Nicknamed "The Tripe" by British critics, unless you believe silver garbage bags are romantic, eating bugs sounds appetizing, and wearing all black is dynamic, skip this movie. Jeremy plays Jaime, an employee for a property developer that wants to evict a gang of people from a building the developer owns. Jaime goes to the gang to try and convince them to go, but instead becomes one of them. I really hate to be critical of any of Jeremy's work, but this was very disappointing and not a good example of his talent. Good points - Lots of Jeremy. Bad points - You really wish he wasn't in this yawner.
Amistad - November 1997
Jeremy had a small role as Judge Bertrand Coglin in this Steven Spielburg masterpiece. It is a powerful movie about the slave revolt on the ship La Amistad and the resulting court battle. It is an amazing film that every American should see. Jeremy's role is very small and I would have been happier to see more of him, but he is wonderful during the short time he is on screen. Good points - Incredible movie. Jeremy looks very handsome and makes a powerful impression during his brief stint on screen. Bad points - His appearance is short.
Mimic - August 1997
Jeremy plays Dr. Peter Mann, husband to Mira Sorvino's Dr. Susan Tyler. The husband and wife team stop a disease running rampant in New York City by genetically engineering a bug to kill the cockroaches that are spreading the disease. Unbeknownst to them, their bug, the Judas Breed, later mutates and begins to prey on man. This is a horror film (a big departure from Jeremy's other roles) and is very scary. The sound affects were chilling and I, for one, didn't sleep well after seeing it. (I'll never look at a cockroach in quite the same way.) Good points - Lots of Jeremy. Bad points - Jeremy is covered in goo for most of the movie, he fakes an American accent, and I'm now terrified of cockroaches (not that I was crazy about them to begin with).
Emma - 1996
Jeremy is Mr. Knightley. Also in the film are Gwyneth Paltrow (Emma), Ewan McGreggor (Frank Churchill), Alan Cummings (Mr. Elton), Greta Scacchi (Mrs. Taylor), Toni Colette (Harriet Smith). This is the ultimate Jeremy movie!!!! This adaptation of Jane Austen's book by the same name is hilarious, sweet, and very romantic. I can't say enough about it! Good points - Where do I start? Bad points - This two hour movie wasn't twenty hours long. I can't get enough of Mr. Knightley!!!!
The Net - 1995
Jeremy is the evil, Jack Devlin. The movie starred Sandra Bullock and Dennis Miller along with Jeremy. The Net was his first big Hollywood movie. It is about a computer programer named Angela Bennett (Sandra Bullock) whose existence is wiped out by a computer terrorist, Jack Devlin. Jack then later pursues Angela and trys to kill her. Good points - This is the movie that started him on the fast track to stardome. Bad points - It was only a so-so thriller.
Carrington - 1995
Jeremy is Beacus Penrose, the sailing womanizer. It starred Emma Thompson, Jonathan Price, and Rufus Sewell. It was the story of Carrington (Emma Thompson) who was in love with a gay writer, Lytton Starchey (Jonathan Price). Good points - This is the sexiest Jeremy has ever looked on screen. Bad points - His appearance was short and he didn't come on screen until an hour into the movie.
Voices from a Locked Room - 1995
Jeremy does double duty in this true story about a man with a split personality. He is both Peter Warlock, the British composer, and Philip Heseltine, Peter's harshest critic. Good points - The casting director for The Net saw this movie and called Jeremy in for a screen test for The Net. Bad points - It's only been shown in the U.S. at 2 a.m. on TNT on the 4th of July. Not exactly scheduled for great exposure.
A Village Affair - 1994
Jeremy plays Anthony Jordan, the slimy brother-in-law. The movie is about the love triangle between a woman, her husband, and her lesbian friend. Good points - Jeremy looked very sexy. Bad points - The film is boring. Jeremy is only on screen about ten minutes and doesn't appear until after an hour into the film.
Wuthering Heights - 1992 (TV)
Jeremy is Hindley Earnshaw, evil brother to Cathy Earnshaw (Juliette Binoche) and tormenter of Heathcliff (Ralph Fiennes). This is an adaptation of Emily Bronte's dark novel by the same name. Good points - Jeremy is in it. Bad points - He looks awful, is mean, and is only in the first twenty minutes or so.
A Fatal Inversion - 1991 (TV)
Jeremy is Dr. Rufus Fletcher, a gynaecologist rising in his profession until a terrible secret from his past threatens is present and future happiness. The movie is a mystery along the same vein as "Usual Suspects". Good points - Jeremy is one of the main stars. Bad points - I'll never trust my doctor again.
Piece of Cake - 1989? (TV)
Jeremy is RAF Pilot "Fitz" Fitzgerald. This movie was shown in the U.S. on Masterpiece Theatre and is based on the book by the same name. It is a five hour movie revolving around the lives of the pilots of Hornet Squadron in 1939 and 1940. Good points - Jeremy looks darling in uniform. Bad points - He is one of the secondary characters and is barely seen in the first and last tape of the six tape set.
Journey's End - 1988 (TV)
Jeremy plays Captain Stanhope. Good points - Jeremy is in the movie. Bad points - I've never seen it and that's about all I know about it.
Suspicion - 1987 (TV)
Jeremy plays Mr. Benson in this remake of an earlier movie by the same name. Good points - Jeremy is in the movie. Bad points - I've never seen it and I understand that his appearance is very short.
Notable TV Series Appearances
Poirot: Dead Man's Mirror
Jeremy plays Hugo Trent, inventor and possible murderer of his uncle. It is shown in the U.S. on the Mystery! television program shown on PBS and A&E. Good points - Jeremy is so cute and young. Bad points - You wonder if such a baby face could be guilty of murder.
His Mystery Films
I've heard that he is in Wish Me Luck and Soft Top, Hard Shoulder, two British made-for-tv movies, but I've never seen them, and have heard little, if anything, about them. I've been unable to confirm their existence, but I keep trying.
