My Letter from Jeremy Northam

A letter from Jeremy

In my case, sometimes it's better to be lucky than smart. If you've read this far, you might be curious to know how I acquired the missive from the sexiest man alive. Well, here's the scoop from the horse's mouth... In August 1997, while Jeremy Northam was on his U.S. media blitz for Mimic, he appeared on a talk show named "The Vibe." The Vibe was only a week old and had an unknown host who had never done a talk show before. Chris Spenser, the host (who would later be fired), didn't manage his guests well and James Brown kept interrupting Jeremy. Poor Jeremy looked incredibly uncomfortable and unhappy. I, feeling sorry for the guy (okay, so the truth is I bought new correspondence cards that day and wanted to break them in), wrote him a three or four line note essentially telling him that his appearance wasn't that bad and that I looked forward to his film. I mailed it off to his publicist the next day and quickly forgot about it. About three weeks later, I received the above letter on hotel stationery. In case you can't read it, I think it says:

Dear Cindy,

You must've been reading my mind after The Vibe. No, I was terrible, but your sweet note cheered me up.

Hope you enjoy Mimic, if you see it and thanks for the very nice thought in writing to me.

All best wishes,
Jeremy Northam.

For the record, except for the one note I wrote David Cassidy at age four, I had never written anyone famous before. (In defense of Mr. Cassidy, he probably couldn't read my writing at the time but my parents thought it was cute so they mailed it to his studio anyway.) I never thought Jeremy would ever see my note. If I actually thought he would read it, I would have given a lot more thought into what I said (and I would have kept a copy). Smart money would have bet against him ever seeing it, let alone answering it, but I've never said I was very bright.
