Hebrew Manuscript Illumination
Shulamit Widawsky: Artist of Ketubot, and other Manuscript Illumination Arts
Here are four examples of various ketubah styles.

I create all my pieces through consultation with the individual or couple for whom I am working.
This is an example of a Baby Naming Certificate.
The text across the top is the traditional prayer spoken at a girl's baby naming. The other three sides are the Shehechi'anu blessing. Inside text is the child's Hebrew and English name and date of birth, followed by the prayer parents recite over their daughter every Shabbat. I have also made the equivalent certificate for a boy.

Some Background...
I began doing English calligraphy as a teenager. When I was in college at the University of Judaism, I began using Hebrew calligraphy. It was 1987 when I made my first Ketubah.

Hebrew manuscript illumination refers to any calligraphic rendering which includes Hebrew text. Illumination refers to the color and gold applied to make it look nice. The manuscript can be in the form of a scroll, a book, or as is the case with the work I do, in the simple form of a single "page" made for framing. The manuscripts that we still have from hundreds of years ago, were generally created on vellum or parchment. Ancient manuscripts made on paper, have long since disappeared. Today's acid free papers allow artists to use a wide variety of papers and paper-boards. For the sake of longevity, we are no longer relegated to the exclusive use of animal skins on which to paint our art.

Please contact me if you would like to know more about this wonderful art-form, or if you would like to see more of my work.

You will not find my work here--all my work is done by hand. I do not mechanically reproduce my work. But this is a great resoure for printed ketubot.
