HKB 5./981 FLORÖY

Florø, Sogn og Fjordane

Main artillery:
Six Schneider 15,5 cm. K.416(f)
Ready for battle: Summer 1942

This battery, with its six guns, was one of the largest in the district. It was built by prisoners of war who lived in barracks close to the town. They had to walk each day out to the battery site. They were also working on a stronghold on a hill overlooking the town and the ship lane, and there are still several bunkers and trenches left at this stronghold. The battery has four tunnelsystems, each separate from the others, and in are in various conditions. Most of the bricks inside the bunkers/tunnels was removed for housebuilding after the war, hence it is only concrete left on the walls and on the ceiling. There are two Schneider guns left at the site. One is partially restored and accessible for public, the other is less accessible, due to heavy under- and overgrowth. Much of the site is private property, since it is in the middle of a residential area built in later times. The 'leitstand' serves as garage and shed, with the staircase down to the tunnels recently made accessible. One or two emplacements are gone due to house construction, but what is left is in quite good condition, apart from the shelters in connection with each emplacement, where the entrance has been destroyed, making them inaccessible, unless you are very slim.

A nice garage?
'Leitstand' for the battery. Converted to car garage and shed.
