The battery was built by Russian POW's, together with some Norwegians, under supervision from Organisation Todt (O.T.). The tunnel system has three entrances, two of which enters a large hall used for personnel accomodation. The third entrance leads through a tunnel to the circular stairway shaft leading up to the command place bunker. A large minefield with a total of 8.555 mines of different sorts was surrounding the battery, and not all were found after the war. After a check in 1968 when two mines were found, there were still nine that not were found. The tunnels and and the big bunkers are in a remarkable good condition for being abandoned for soon 55 years. The tunnels are all dry and there is little or no rust on the air pumps, that still works. The grease on the pumps is still in place and you can hear the air in the ventilationsystem when turning the cranks. The reason must be that the battery and the tunnels were more or less completed by the end of the war, so everything is concreted and waterproofed (gasproofed) so no water is leaking in from the roof. It is also a bit hidden away, located in a rural area, so it is not "run down" by souvenir hunters. The gun emplacements is a different story. They are heavy overgrown, the shelters and ammunition storages in connection to the emplacements are more or less closed by rocks and soil by the landowner, who is not very willing to preserve it. But some of the shelters are accessible, but not all the way through. Two of the entrances to the tunnels are also closed with rocks and soil. Same is the case with the entrance to the command bunker, where you also can access the tunnels. There is only one open entrance directly in to the tunnels. Refer to the second picture below. Beware for bats when walking in the main tunnel system.
