The Art Test

As a comic book artist working for Smorgasbord Productions you should be familiar with our style of page layouts and page descriptions. You may even have to read some messy scrawl at times.

Page layouts are rough sketches that depict the panel order, camera angle, action, the location of character and dialogue balloons, sound effects and anything else which appears on the page.

Page descriptions are the comic book in script form. They give a page by page and panel by panel description of what is seen in each panel and what is said in the word balloons.

Note: As the page illustrator you are free and encouraged to alter the page layouts and page descriptions if you feel it is necessary or improves the comic. Page layouts are mostly just suggestions -although sometimes they're very strong suggestions. However, sometimes you may not even get any page layouts at all. You may just get pages descriptions. Or possibly you may just get a simple script which you have to break down into pages yourself.

On the following pages are three sets of sample page layouts and page descriptions for the series Mad Beanz, Lawyers, Mechs & Money and Samurai Hoe-down.

Study the character designs and practice sketching the characters. You are allowed to depict the characters in a style slightly different than they are portrayed. However it is essential that the characters still be recognizable.

Then do a rough pencil sketch of each of the panels. Final pencils and inks aren't necessary but if you want to show off your inking skills then ink a portion of the drawing. Just do enough so I can judge your ability to draw the characters in action.

When finished please send image files to madbeanz@hotmail.com or snail mail them to the address below.
