  14. DoubleTake magazineScreen shot - Double Take
Photos and history, plus fiction. I browsed But It Got Better by Abigail Thomas. The author took a photo and wrote a fictional story about the shot. I also looked at an essay in the first issue (the most recent is #16) on a woman who "asks children to phograph their dreams." Plenty of ideas here on how to use photos and photography in your classroom. Each issue offers a mix of fiction, poetry, photography and essays on the lives of everyday people in an effort to open new ways to see our world, ourselves, and each other. A special page for teachers povides detatils on how the magazine might be used to: * develop higher level critical thinking skills by using imaginative, sequential and problem solving strategies * improve creative and expository writing skills * develop visual literacy by expanding awareness of the interplay between words and images "Themes" (such as A Sence of Place, Work, Work, Work (work that we do and the attitude with which we approach it have a significant impact on the way we define ourselves as individuals, and as members of our communities and of society as a whole.) In the online activity manual, you can click on one of these themes and view the issue and articles that relate to that theme. When you click on the article, poem or photo, the browser displays the online version and links to "Inquiries & Explorations" featuring questions for the students to answer and writing/estrapolation/evaluation suggestions.

  23. Leadership Online
  24. The Library
I enjoyed "Walking the dog" and was touched by "Archeology" (A must read for those searching for meaning in life). John (the author's name) has successfully communicated his joys and sorrows about life in fine interesting prose. Some small graphics add color. The author also praises electronic book publishing because they have "an immediacy that printed publications find almost impossible to capture..." and "...can grow and change on a daily basis", especially if a dialogue is formed with the reader.
  25. Book - The Magazine for the Reading Life
From "Flights of Angels by Ellen Gilchrist Little, Brown (on happiness in literature) to "Palm Reading" (on-line books), this site offers fine reading materials. 27. Arts & Letters Daily
I found it difficult to leave this site...the selection of articles is excellent...but you may disagree based on your topic preferences. Sunstein: "Sexual Equality vs. Religion: What Should the Law Do?" is a good example of the quality of the selections.

  33. Galaxy eZine -- Original Science Fiction
The sensors showed a switch was coming through. I adjusted my wide-angle lens to catch a better view of the tunnel down below. Our soldiers were just running in, arms at the ready, cameras mounted on their helmets to provide the command center with important visuals of the enemy's base. Into the black maw they disappeared for a moment. Flipping across the universe, into the hands of night, video patches showed giant towers. Lots of metal. Enemy robots moving to intersect our soldiers. Their flame-throwers forced a swift retreat back into the tunnel. At the same time, the enemy launched an attack against us from the other side of the tunnel. In full pursuit of our agents, they emerged from the septum, laying down a heavy line of fire in order to recapture the two hostages we had just rescued. From high above, I directed the giant air-blower on them, allowing our people to get behind the plexi-shields. The air-blower hovered in the air, buffeting the aliens back into the tunnel mouth.

From EGG OF TIME, by Albion Moonlight Butters -- available on site with many more (not all are of the "Space Opera" variety).

  57. H-REVIEW
A centralized project at Michigan State University to facilitate reviewing. A click on the "Review" link on the page led to a listing of books reviewed. I selected "Cleansing the Fatherland: Nazi Medicine and Racial Hygiene (April, 1996) " first and "Past Imperfect: History According to the Movies. New York: Henry Holt, 1995." In addition to the reviews, each review page includes a "comment" form on the review/book or on the teaching of the book. This makes it possible for reviewers, authors and readers to engage in interactive discussions. K-12 teachers who make frequent trips to the local university book store and Barnes and Noble to stock their professional libraries might make this the first stop. Its comprehensive searching capabilities make the H-Net Reviews web site a powerful resource for scholars and students alike. Finally, your more likely to see a review of a current book at the site, as the List obtains reviews within a matter of months of the actual publication of the book. (see the link below the reviews sorted by author, all 1997 books).
Consider this to be a prime example of the value of being connected and familiar with the Internet (and increasingly, the Web segment).
