Conversations with researchers of various ERNST ERTELs
Wolfgang Ertel:
My grandfather, Ernst Ertel and his brother Emil were
born in Kandern, which is between Basel and Freiburg, near the south-west
corner of Germany. This is not too far from Baden-Baden. Emil Ertel is
still alive and I will try to call him the next days to find out about
his ancestors. I'll also get his address, which I could send you. My
grandfather was born in 1901.
Gary Ertel: Our family name
is also Ertel and we live in Auckland New Zealand. There are only five
families of Ertel in New Zealand all related. In my travels around the
world I have not seen to many other Ertels listed so perhaps through
distant paths may be we are related.
Nancy (Ertel)
Sween: My father was the
youngest child of Ernst and Wilhelmina Ertel who came to Dayton, Ohio,
USA in the 1880s from Baden-Baden, GERMANY. My grandfather was born in
1861 and was a cabinet maker for railroad cars. I would like to find
out who his parents were. With Wolfgang's help, I came up with this family history chart. Is Ertel a
common name? I've seen similar spellings such as Ertl, Ertle, Oertel...
Wolfgang: I have never seen Oertel. In the Munich phone directory I
just found about 30 Ertel and a full page of Ertl (about 400). Thus, Ertl
is much more popular than Ertel. That's the reason why most people
misspell my name as Ertl (also, a former bavarian minister's name was Ertl).
Olu Pfeiffer:
As Baden is not connected to the Internet, the only thing I
could do for your is: having a look into the telephone book
of Baden. Well there are about 10-20 Ertels around Baden :-(
Wolfgang: I talked to my aunt (Elsa Ertel) who is very interested in
the family history. She has done some nice research and she sent me a
nice big table of all my predecessors in the Ertel line back until the
early 19th century.
Gary Ertel: I have contacted my uncle in New Plymouth who is
interested in our history and he informs me of the following.
His grandfather was Ernst Adolph Bernherd Ertel born 1870.
He left Germany in the 1890s to come to New Zealand.
His father was Ernst Ertel married to Johanna Busch. This Ernst was an
officer in the German Army.
My uncle has recently purchased a book on the ancestry of the Ertel's. He
is trying to find out more and has come to a little bit of sticky patch
at the moment. He has however managed to trace all known relatives in New
Zealand.
David my uncle would like to know more so without being a pest any info
would be nice. David's postal address is
David Ertel
3 Miro Street
Inglewood.
New Zealand
Wolfgang: It's really surprising that the name Ernst
occurs so often among our predecessors, in the New Zealand line as
well as in the Ohio (US) line and in my german line. I wonder where
Ernst Adolph Bernhard Ertel and his son Ernst Ertel lived in
Germany. My predecessors come from the small town of Kandern which is
in the very south west of Germany, close to Basel and L"orrach, not
far from the French border. I will send the chart about our family
which my aunt (Elsa Koopmann, born Ertel) produced, to David. The
address of my aunt is (she speaks only a little bit English):
