Midsummer evening, the tide just beginning
to turn, and after closing the four quarters,
leaving the circle, we took each from the two priestesses
a small boat that was woven from banana leaves
with a candle set in it. And as we passed between
two rows of white clad maidens, there were baskets of roses
and rose petals and we put them into the boats
as we chose. The pair at the end held tapers
and they lit the candles as we passed. So we went out
over the soft grass and down to the beach, wading
out into the still warm water, and we set our boats
to go out with the tide, and our hopes and prayers
and loves we laid on them, the sea blood red then darkening
as they sailed far off, the candles still glowing
till no sight remained and we turned slowly back
to the land and the night.
This Poem describes the 1996 Summer Solstice ritual held at Bribie Island by the Daughters of Danu for the Brisbane pagan community.
