SAMHAIN RITUAL

The RITE FOR THE DEAD

THE LIGHTING OF THE SAMHAIN FIRE

The High Priestess anoints each covener with oil or holy Water on their third eye, inscribing the Invoking Pentagram and carries the Beacon Candle around the Circle, followed by the coveners, as she says:

HPS: With this web of light, I strengthen the bond between us and our ancestors this Samhain night.

All: We are the bridge between the worlds, and need only extend ourselves in welcome to draw the spirits forth. By the power of the elements, we invite the spirits to manifest and share this Samhain night with us.”

(The priestess then lights the candle in the cauldron [if indoors] or the kindling for the small bonfire [if outside].  The priest then goes to the altar and brings the bowl containing the crumpled, dried dittany of Crete to the priestess.  If outdoors, as the flames begin to grow, she then scatters the herb particles in the fire [if indoors, she will simply put a pinch of the herb in the candle flame] as she recites the following reading.)

HPS: Death for life the Sacrifice, another year gives up its ghost.
Freshly dead seasons consumed in the bonfires of Samhain,
Billowing crimson, orange in ashen blackness; spectral fiery incantations.
Goddess-summoned spirits celebrate this Night between the years.
End, Beginning, No Time Betwixt, cradle and grave in one.
Future faded, Past returned, all alive have died.
Dimensions departed, merged with the moment;
Mystery the magick yarn for Hecate’s Life-raising loom!

Each covener calls out the names of their beloved dead, and all sit and contemplate the fire. Photographs and mementoes of the dead to be remembered and honoured can be put out in the Circle.

HPS: Blessed be our remembered dead who are bound to us by the Circle of Light and Life.
(Here she says the names of the dead to be remembered).
May these and all souls find peace and complete fulfilment in the divine Light.”

All speak in turn of their dead.

All sing the following song.

All:  Rhiannon carry us,
Rhiannon carry us,
Rhiannon carry us over

Crossing the threshold from
Sleeping to waking from
Birthing to Dying and over (repeat)

BLESSING THE APPLES

Take apples from the altar and form a small circle with the apples at the foot of the altar. High Priest carves celtic cross on apple, while the High Priestess carves a circle around it. They kneel over the apples, one on each side, clasping the apples one right hand to the other’s left hand. They hold their athames in their free hand, blades pointed down towards the apples.

HP: “By this ancient symbol of the encircled cross, fruit of the tree of knowledge, we exorcise thee of negativity. Be purified so thou may nourish body and spirit with our tender tangy flesh.”

HPS: “Druidic fruit of immortality, you who hold the powers of divination in your cores, be consecrated. May you serve as vehicles by which to reveal to these witches communication with their Higher Selves.

[Take this apple home, and put it before mirror with 2 lighted black candles with a 3rd candle behind person. At stroke of midnight, eat the apple while looking into mirror. By the time you finish the apple, a vision of your Higher self may appear in the mirror.]

Death of the God

HP: Tonight is a night of death, when our blessed God, Pan, passes into the Summerland.     (Picks up the God candle).

All: Blessed be Pan, beloved of all the Summerland.

HPS: Tonight is also a night of Life, when we honour our wise aged Goddess, Gaia, who will see us through this ever-darkening season to life renewed.
(Picks up the Goddess candle).

All: Blessed be the Crone, bringer of Death and giver of Life.

High Priestess and High priest hold candles so that the flames unite.

HP & HPS: Tonight Goddess and God are part of two different worlds. They are separated from each other.

They separate the candles. The High Priest blows the God candle and both are replace on the altar. The high Priest lies on the ground on his back with his head on the High priestess’s lap. She cradles his head and makes crying sounds, as do the rest of the coven.

HPS: Farewell blessed Lord. Safe be Your journey into the Summerland.

Maid: Wise old Goddess, may the loving comfort of Your people ease Your sorrow.

All put hands on the High Priestess’s shoulders).

HPS: (Rises) As our beloved Lord passes through the veil which separates our world from the world of spirit, that veil is for a brief moment cast aside. Those who have already passed over may wish to seek their loved ones again. We will call to them that they may join us in our festivities.

She calls out the names of loved ones, then gets the Magic Mirror. All look into the Mirror and try to commune with their beloved as they gaze into the Mirror. Place candles in candleholders on altar after naming each one’s blessed dead and speaking of them.

All: Blessed be our remembered dead who are bound to us by the Circle of life. May these and all souls find peace and complete fulfilment in the Divine light.

THE WELCOME TO WINTER

HPS: Friends and friendly spirits. Blessed be the new winter, season of rest and secret regeneration.

All: Blessed be the spirit and flesh, Blessed be the ever turning Wheel,
Behold the Summer’s end. Behold the new winter.

HPS: (takes wand) Farewell blessed Summer  (Performs Banishing Pentagram)

All: Farewell, season of warmth and light.

HPS: Welcome to winter, time of rest and secret regeneration. (Performs Invoking Pentagram)

All: Welcome season of cold and dark.

HPS: We have seen where we are travelling, for it is where we have been. We are all one with all that is.

THE WITCHES' RUNE AND CONE OF POWER

Dance deosil facing inwards and holding hands, left palm upwards, right palm downwards, slowly at first, then ever faster and faster. Chant the following till the dancing reaches a climax, and the Cone of Power is raised.

“Earth Mother, come to me. Heal my wounds and comfort me.
Earth Mother, come to me. Heal my wounds and set me free.
Earth Mother, come to me. Heal my wounds and comfort me.
I am the Earth, I am the Earth, I am the form of the Goddess.
I am the Earth, I am the Earth, I am the form of the Goddess.

Air, wind, breath and blow. Dawn light breezes go.
Air, wind, breath and blow. Dawn light breezes go.
Air, wind, breath and blow. Dawn light breezes go.
I am the breath, I am the breath, I am the breath of the Goddess.
I am the breath, I am the breath, I am the breath of the Goddess.

Fire, fire, warm desire, Change me, form me till I’m higher.
Fire, fire, warm desire, Change me, form me till I’m higher.
Fire, fire, warm desire, Change me, form me till I’m higher.
I am the heat, I am the heat, I am the heat of the Goddess.
I am the heat, I am the heat, I am the heat of the Goddess.

Water falling, rain and snow. Water rushing like a stream.
Water spouting up in steam, rolling in the ocean.
Water spouting up in steam, rolling in the ocean.
I am the tears, I am the tears, I am the tears of the Goddess.
I am the tears, I am the tears, I am the tears of the Goddess.

Earth, Air, Fire and Water, Earth, Air, Fire and water,
Come to us your son and daughter.  Come to us your son and daughter.
Come to us your son and daughter.  Come to us your son and daughter."

Then cry “Down” when the dancing has climaxed, and fall to the ground, sitting facing each other.

PREFACE OF THE GREAT RITE

HP: Samhain is a feast in honour of the dead,
but death is not a final end;
merely a period of the spirit's rest and reflection
preparatory to yet another incarnation,
another time-encapsulated adventure on the periphery of eternity.
Reincarnation demands a re-entry into flesh,
a baptism anew into the perimeters of the physical
that can only be initiated by that compelling union of body with body
in sheer erotic rapture;
the Great Rite of life-creating sexuality.
Only in this way are the disembodied able to be born again into a new body
for their continuing growth from life to life.
On this Night of the Dead,
let us rejoice in the miracle of emerging life;
the sexual force of procreation
which ensures for the departed a reincarnation,
a purposeful return to the land of the living.

WORDS OF CONSUMMATION.

HP & HPS: Behold the fertile consummation, the quickening womb.
Behold the sacred act of sexuality, restoring flesh to the formless, substance to the spirit.

PARTING PRAYERS

HPS: Crone of Dark Moons and Death, Hag Queen of All Hallows, be pleased to remain among us until the last shadows of Samhain are swallowed in the light-fused mists of morning.
Protect us from all harm and spiritual malevolence.
Enlighten us from the wells of Thy ageless wisdom, and endow us with the insight which comes with reverence for Thy worship.

All: All Hallows Hail, Hecate, and Farewell!

FINAL BENEDICTION

HPS: This rite of Samhain is ended! May shadows and spirits guide you towards the dark-crystalled wisdom of the Crone as you learn to be at peace in the season of death that leads to life.
