At the
time our novel, The Hand of Robin Squires
is occurring; a war between the Spanish,
English, French, and the British is
proceeding. This war was called Queen
Anne's War, but many knew it as The War
of Spanish Succession. This war began in
1702 (a few years earlier than the novel
begins) and ended in 1713.The war began
when the French and their Indian allies
raided English frontier settlements in
New England. Queen Anne's War was
centered in New England, South Carolina,
and Florida. The gifts that Edward
Squires (a character in the novel) brings
back for his family are ones that were
aboard the Spanish ship Edward invaded
during this war. Although this issue does
not play a big role in our novel, it was
indeed a very important historical event.
