WOW COLLECTORS!
Parlez vous Mego?
Serious Mego completists may soon find themselves
learning French and buying plane tickets to Paris in order to finish up their collections,
thanks to not one but two recent Mego discoveries originating in France.
The Mighty Mightor
Members of the Mego mailing list were treated to a
photo (shown at left) of the Mighty Mightor, a 12" French exclusive Mego sold by Pin
Pin Toys. The existance of the Mighty Mightor was first revealed in last year's first
issue of the Mego fan club newsletter. Based on a Hanna Barbera cartoon from the late
sixites and very popular overseas, the Mighty Mightor includes a large horned cowl,
armbands, boots, a belt and costume, and his mystic club. This doll appears to have been
released in the late seventies, due to the fact that all examples that have been uncovered
suffer from the dreaded Mego head fade found in dolls manufactured during this period.
No mint boxed examples have been found yet, but a
loose Mightor will set you back a little over $1000.
Sylvie Vartan
eBay, the popular online auction service, is a
treasure trove for Mego afficianados. In the past year or so, eBay auctions have yielded
thousands of Megos, including two mint in box Greatest American Hero sets, dozens of boxed
pirates and knights, and even an alter ego or two. Recently, another rare treasure was
listed...an outfit for the French exclusive Sylvie Vartan fashion doll.
Sylvie Vartan is a popular French singer of the 60s
and 70s, and this doll was a natural addition to Megos line of 12" celebrity and
character dolls. The photos posted online are blurry copies, unfortunately, so it is
difficult to compare them to the likeness of the real singer. Also available in the line,
according to the listing, were twelve different never before seen fashions.
So, next time you are on a trip overseas, be sure to
visit old toy stores and markets. The next Mighty Mightor or Sylvie Vartan may be yours. |

The Mighty Mightor Mego makes
many Mego mailing list members
markedly misty-eyed.
