About the Mision to Barquisimeto

Guardian Lutheran Church is located in Dearborn, Michigan (USA) and is part of the Lutheran church, Missouri Synod. This mission trip to Barquisimeto, Venezuela is the final phase of sharing Our Jubilee at Guardian. In Leviticus Chapter 25, the Israelites were given instructions to declare every 50th year, the “Year of Jubilee”, as a feast year. The purpose of this feast year was to help the poor and provide stability for their society by canceling debts, liberating slaves and indentured servants and returning land to original family owners (the twelve tribes). The land all belonged to God and each new landowner was actually “borrowing” the use of it during the years between the Jubilee celebration. It was a time of renewal for the whole nation of Israel, the people of God.

Hence, Guardian’s 50th anniversary celebration “ Sharing Our Jubilee” was similar to the Old Testament feast year in concept. Our renewal includes enriching our mission and ministry at Guardian as well as taking on an ambitious world mission project. The three year celebration encompasses a building refurbishment program (completed 1997), updating the Guardian constitution, forming a new Mission Board, and establishing an agreement with Cristo es Amor Lutheran Church in Barquisimeto, Venezuela to provide financial and “hands-on” assistance in building a worship sanctuary.

In August 1998, the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (with financial participation from Guardian) purchased property in Barquisimeto, Venezuela to serve as the future site of the church building and parsonage. The facility is also shared with the call center for the radio outreach program, “Christ For All Nations”, which provides social and spiritual support to callers who inquire as a result of the radio program messages.

There are four phases to the Barquisimeto renovation program. In the first phase already completed, the “Christ For All Nations” call center was established. Phase two, consists of the building of the sanctuary (Guardian Lutheran will participate in this phase). The final two phases will include the building of classrooms and living quarters.

The Guardian travel team will be working at the Barquisimeto site in the month of February 1999.
