IMAGE OF THE COMET HALE-BOPP SODIUM TAIL

The Hale-Bopp Sodium Tail seen from Azores on 18 Abril 97 two days later on its discovery by the Isaac Newton Group of Telescopes in Canarian Island La Palma.

Here is the statement of Javier Mendez Alvarez and some messages exchanged about this matter.

"Dear Joao,

I am impressed by your work. Congratulations!

I would like to help you but I don't understand the meaning of sensibilization. I understand that you can detect the sodium tail without using a sodium filter but it's really dificult. The merit of your work is that you have done it. Anyway, the proof of existence is using a sodium filter. Please, let me know what you need exactly.

Yours,

Joao,

Yes, you can. Sodium has two sharp lines in the optical range. HB two sodium lines were really bright but if you spread the energy of these lines in the whole optical range, the spectral range you observed through, sodium appears really weak. That's why it's dificult to detect. But if you use a narrow band filter centered at the sodium wavelenghts you will see the tail very obviously. But if you use another narrow band filter centered at anoother wavelenght, you won't see anything. That's what we did to discover the sodium tail. In oher words, if you had used a sodium filter with your equipment you would have detected the sodium tail very clearly.

Yours,

Dear Javier Mendez

I am an amateur astronomer living in Azores islands (s. Miguel) and on 18 April I took some pictures of comet Hale-Bopp.I used the Fuji SuperG 800+ film.I was treating this images with a common program like Paint Shop Pro when I saw some features on this image.I remember imediately the images tooked by IAC and the sodium tail format. I would like to talk with somebody about the possibility to obtain a sensibilization of the Fuji SG 800+ film with the sodium tail.

Thank you in advance for the attention done to this matter.
