You have arrived at the official web page of the MARIANNE NOWOTTNY FAN CLUB. Marianne, who was born in 1982 and will be entering her senior year of high school, has astonished the New York music and art scene with the release of her first CD, "afraid of me" (Abaton #001). She lives in Northwest New Jersey, where she passes her days singing, playing her concertmate 990 keyboard, painting and drawing strange visions, and collecting vintage clothing. She has, at the age of 17, begun a unique musical and artistic journey that we will document here for all who are interested. Please check this site for updated information on Marianne and her duo SHELL, and for unpublished photographs and drawings. INSIDER TIP#1: Her first name is pronounced "Mah-ri-ah-na" not "MaryAnn"; her middle name is Wilhelmine. She comes from a German-American family and has two brothers and a half-sister. After learning the rudiments of piano playing from her mother, she developed a style that references the scales and modes of eastern music, American popular song and electronic pop-rock. She incorporates introspective leaps of imagination into her lyrics and song structures both arcane and complex. She is able to present this as a kind of avant-pop expressionism, aloof but still accessible. It is her own type of "popmusic" Marianne's vocal range can be described as a warm contralto, which she expresses as both a cool whisper and a fierce growl. Her upper register is clear and sweet, and can be projected well, but she tends to favor her lower range. Marianne is able to glide her voice through scale modulation seemingly effortlessly, stopping at ramdom quarter-tones and surprising intervals that are convincing in execution and logic. This natural vocal awareness demonstrates a well-rooted inherent musical understanding that is extremely unique. It should not be surprising therefore that she has been compared to Egypt's most beloved singer, Om Kolsoum. Ms. Nowottny's dark operatic voice sweeps one along an imaginary "river meandering through subconsciousness." Her song compositions, which explore multi-layers of sound and textures, can be compared to the early electronic music experiments of John Pfeiffer or the "pop-music" simulations of Brian Eno. |
