Henry Thomas Smart (1813-1879)
詞は1816年クリスマス・イブに発表されました。当時のタイトルは「降誕(Nativity)」でした。また作曲者のスマートは、この曲を書いたとき盲目になっていたといいます。ロンドンのリージェント・スクエア・プレスビテリアン教会にちなんで、「リージェント・スクエア(Regent Square)」と題されていたそうです。
