原曲はフランスのカロル"Barnes(Gloria)"からと言われ、同じくフランスの"Les Anges dans nos Campagnes"というカロルの詞がつけられました。
この曲は、フランスの代表的なカロルの中でも最も有名なものの一つです。
18世紀に作られたと言う研究家もいますが、最古の記録では、19世紀中頃(1855年)のフランスのカロル集に載せられていると言われています。
旋律は典型的なフランスのカロルのもので、ルフランは二行、メロディーは１オクターブ以内で綴られています。音域に幅はなく、主旋律は単調ですが、素朴な喜びを抑えたままルフランに引き継がせて、「グロオォリア」という箇所の、曲中最も高い音となる「オ」の音で、全ての喜びが一気に集中するような構成になっています。この構成がこの歌を美しく彩り、喜びの素直な表出を演出していると思います。
