● 内容と著者について この書物「黄金伝説(The Golden Legend：Legenda aurea)は、カトリックの聖人について、歴史・伝説を問わず集成し、それぞれを細かく丁寧に述べているものです。そこには、聖人特有の不思議な言い伝え、深い内容、衝撃的な逸話が多く盛り込まれています。 さらに、内容は聖人に留まらず、キリスト教の言い伝え、記念日について、事細かな考察と多くの説をあげて紹介しており、言うなれば教会暦の大注釈書と呼ぶにふさわしいものになっています。おそらく中世以来、聖書以外で最も広く読まれた本の一つでしょう。 この本は、1260年頃、ヤコブス・デ・ヴォラギネ(ウォラギネ)によって集大成されたものです。ヴォラギネは托鉢修道士(フライアー：friar)の学者で、後にジェノアの大司教になった人です。彼の目的は、信者の心を捉え、勇気づけ、信仰の力を紡ぎ上げることでした。そのため、教会に伝わる伝説と伝統を纏め上げ、それを残そうとしたのでしょう。「黄金伝説」という書名も、当初からのものではなく、時代を経て読み継がれてゆくうちに、「何者にも代え難い最高の伝説の書」として、こういう名前がつけられたと言われています。 これらの物語は、いにしえの聖人達を、まるで13世紀に生活する民衆のようなリアルさでいきいきと蘇らせました。しかし、同時にそこに繰り広げられる聖人たちが行った奇跡の数々は、一般の人々にとればただ驚くばかりの内容だったと言えるでしょう。聖女ユリアナの悪魔の誘いへの一撃、聖ヒラリウスの予知力、聖ヤコブスの信じられない殉教の逸話など、どれをとっても驚異に満ちています。また、殉教の聖人達の言い伝えはどれも凄惨なものが多いのですが、ヴォラギネの筆はその凄惨さを越え、そこにある信仰の真実、尊さを訴える力に満ちています。 この本では、教会暦に沿い、その記念日順に聖人達が紹介されています。そこには聖人伝説を離れた、数多くの魅力溢れる文化と歴史の話題も盛り込まれています。例えばローマの祭りがいかにキリスト教にとりこまれたか、僧の剃髪の裏側に隠された象徴とは何か、カエルを宿したネロの「懐胎」の戯話等、驚くほど庶民的な逸話がちりばめられています。さらに、随所に見られる聖書からの豊富な引用は、この書物が「聖なる書物」であることを語りかけています。また、イエスと聖母マリアに捧げられた章では、その内容は感動に満ち、教義に生命を吹き込むことに成功していると言えるでしょう。 この書物は、文字どおり汲めども尽きない発見と驚きの泉です。中世の数百年を通して、信者達がこの本を宝物のようにして読み耽ったことも十分にうなずける気がします。 ● 聖人伝説の源泉 さまざまな聖人伝説、とくにキリスト教の初期に活躍し、現在では歴史の霧の中に閉ざされている聖人達の言い伝えは、ほとんどがこの「黄金伝説」に依拠しています。 この本さえあれば、ほとんどのカトリックの聖人達の物語を知ることが出来るので、資料が少ない中世までのキリスト教信仰については、手軽に参照出来るいわゆる聖人「虎の巻」として、ネタ本の一つになっています。一般に流布している有名な聖人達の言い伝え、特にサンタ・クロースのモデルの聖ニコラス、広く信仰されている聖ルチアなどの伝説は、原本のほとんどがこの「黄金伝説」だと言っても過言ではありません(もちろん、これらの聖人についての、更に昔からの「伝記」は存在しています)。海外の入門書の中には、何の注釈も考察も加えず、単にこの本の丸写しに終始している代物まであったと聞いています。 さらに言えば、内容があまりにも素晴らしいため、それをそのままうのみにしてしまう誘惑にかられることもあります。もちろん、いかに素晴らしい本であれ、書かれていることが史実かどうかは別の問題です。「伝説」と「史実」とは峻別されるべきであり、そこには自ずから別のアプローチが必要となるでしょう。 しかし、一方で、こうした「伝説」が、信仰や伝統を生み、キリスト教を中心とした「西洋」を文化・宗教・政治面で支え、同時にそれを揺るがす原因にもなってきたことは否定出来ません。その意味でも、キリスト教に限らず、広く西洋文化を理解するために、一度は手にとって親しんでみたい数少ない書物の一つだと思われます。 ● 本について この本は、洋書の売り場で簡単に注文することが出来ると思います。数巻に別れていますのでご注意ください。また、日本語版も出版されていると聞いています(人文書院刊)ので、それを利用することも出来るでしょう。ただし、値段は相当高いものになっていると思います。
