ベトナム戦争当時、ジョン・レノンが明確に「ベトナム反戦」を意識して作曲した歌が数曲あります。 "I Do not Want to be a Soldier", P.マッカートニーとの合作 "Give Peace a Chance"、ソロ・ソングの "Imagine"、そして、最後のものが1972年に発表されたこの"Happy Xmas (War Is Over)"です。
この歌は、ヨーコ・オノとの合作で、ジョンの息子のジュリアン (Julian) とヨーコの娘キョーコ (Kyoko) へのクリスマス・プレゼントとして作られたものです。しかし、歌の内容は、戦争の終結に向けての「神への誓約書」と表現するのがふさわしいかも知れません。同時に、終生世界平和を訴え続けたレノンの、クリスマスにことよせた祈りでもあったはずです。
