メンデルスゾーンの原曲は、祝祭歌「Festgesang」(1840)の第２曲でした。これは、グーテンベルグの印刷術発明の４００年記念祝典のため作曲された「世俗カンタータ」で、初演は1840年6月25日にライプチヒで行われました。(作品集 R15/120)
この第２曲の合唱が、ウェスリー詞、カミングス編で、このクリスマスの賛美歌になったといいます。ウェスリーは、曲の初演より以前になくなっていましたが、ウェスリーの書いた以下の詩にカミングスが曲をつけたと言われています。
