作曲：アドルフ・アダン
Adolphe Charles Adam(1803-1856)
作曲したのはバレエ「ジゼル(Giselle 1841)」で有名なフランスの作曲家アダンです。発表当時は教会筋から「音楽性に乏しく、全体として宗教的精神に欠けている」と酷評を受けましたが、万人に親しまれる旋律は時の審判を経てなお人気を保ち、今日ではアダンならではの秀作として愛されています。
作詞者のクラッポーはワイン商人を経て、フランスのロクモール(Roquemaure)の市長になった人で、片手間に詩を書いていました。英訳したドゥイトは音楽ジャーナル(Dwight's Journal of Music)の編集をしていたと言われています。
