この曲は、バッハの「教会カンタータ１４７番：心と口と行いと生活で」(一部散逸)の終楽章です。この曲のアレンジでは、英国の女流ピアニスト、マイラ・ヘスがピアノ演奏用に編曲したものが最も有名です。
ところで、この曲の原曲はヨハン・ショップの手になるもので、それをバッハが編曲したのだ、と聞いたことがあります。これは、アメリカの賛美歌に入っています。下に掲載してありますので、参考に聞いてみてください。題名はほぼ同じですが、曲の感じがだいぶ違っています。また、有名なピアノ曲の方は歌詞はありませんが、こちらのほうには、マルティン・ヤヌスによる歌詞が付けられています。
