この曲は、1570年に出版された Zweibrueken と Neuburg でのプロテスタントの式典についての書籍に名前が出てきます。式典に用いられたこの曲の説明には、「クリスマス・イブのための非常に古い歌曲 (uraltes Lied) である」と書かれています。

実際、この曲はローマ・カトリック時代からクリスマス・イブの式典に正式な曲として歌われ、その美しさゆえにプロテスタントの式典にも採用された歌曲の一つだ、と言われています。当時の古いしきたりが、遥かドイツでも続いていたことが分かると同時に、新・旧両派の対立が非常に激しかった時代に、ドイツに多くいたルター派プロテスタントの人々が、憎しみを越えてこのカトリックの曲を賞賛し、式典に用いて歌ったということは特筆すべきことでしょう。

歌詞は、半分ラテン語、半分は北部ドイツの方言で書かれていますが、これも注目すべき点でしょう。
