● 現代を描くクリスマスの賛美歌
時代が進むと賛美歌もより深く、より苦悩に対峙するものとなります。
この曲は、数ある賛美歌の中でもかなり異色のものの一つでしょう。原詩の意味を忠実に辿ると、主の降誕を描いたクリスマスの歓びの歌とは明らかな一線を画していることがわかります。
この歌は、イエス降誕の瞬間を描いたものではありません。降誕から二千年を経たこの時に、未だ争いを続ける人々に対して、「天使の歌を聞こう」と切実に訴える祈りの歌です。
さらに、「反戦の歌」とも、天使の歌を忘れた世の人々への「警鐘の歌」とも読み取ることが出来ます。一体、この歌の背後には何があったのでしょう。
シアーズによるこの歌詞は、作詞者の友人で、マサチューセッツ州クインシーの牧師であった W.P.ラント(Lunt)の求めに応じて書かれたと言われています。1849年、この歌は日曜学校のクリスマス会で歌われ、翌1850年の「Christian Register」により世に出ました。
当時、欧州では、社会主義勢力の台頭をきっかけに、二月革命、三月革命、などの革命の嵐が吹き荒れ、アメリカ合衆国では、メキシコとの間の領土問題が大規模な戦争に発展しました。さらに、アジアではアヘン戦争が起こり、先の見えない混沌とした情勢が続いていました。シアーズはこれを深く憂い、世界はどこへ向かおうとしているのか、その賛美歌の中にクリスマスの祝いの心を呼び戻そうとしました。
「二千年もの過ちに、目覚めぬ人々の争いの日々」
と歌う部分は、作者の苦痛の叫びを表しているかのようです。
そして、時代はどうなったのでしょう。この後、世界はクリミア戦争を皮切りに、より激しくより残虐な戦いの時代を迎えます。そして、アメリカには、同国人たちが戦う南北戦争の悲劇が訪れました。
この歌は、ある意味で2000年紀を迎えようとする「現代」そのものにも当てはまる賛美歌なのかも知れません。誰も戦いを望まない。誰も悲しみを求めない。しかし、時代が容赦なくそれを与えるとするなら、そこには何か間違っているものがあるはずです。この「天なる神には」は、その大切な何かを私たちに告げているように思えてなりません。
作詞者のシアーズは、ニューヨーク州のユニオン大学を経て、ハーヴァード神学校へ進みました。後、ウエィランド、ランカスター、ウエストンなどの地域の(三位一体を排する)ユニテリアン派教会で聖職に従事しました。その傍ら、Monthly Religious Magazine の制作にも精力的に協力をしました。
作曲のリチャード・ウイリスは、ニューヨーク・トリビューンの編集者としても活躍したと言われています。
● 新しい「天なる神には」
この曲の背後に流れる意味を受け、この歌詞に、より深い印象を与える新しい音楽をつけた音楽家がいます。Sam Phillips と T-Bne Burnett (Virgin Records) の二人は、映画「A Midnight Clear(1991)」(邦題：真夜中の戦場)のために、この古い有名な詩に思い切ったアレンジを加えました。このアレンジをここでご紹介出来ないのが残念ですが、映画のエンド・クレジットに流れる憂いを含んだ深みのある旋律は、有名なこの旋律にひけをとらない素晴らしいものだと思います。
