世界で広く愛されている、伝統的なオーストリアのキャロルです。
リピートのコーラス部がついているイギリスの初期のキャロルとくらべると、ドイツやオーストリアでは別の形式のキャロルが育っていたことがわかります。歌詞はとてもかわいく、曲も静かですから、子供を寝かしつける子守り歌としてもよく歌われています。
ドイツ語の歌詞と英語に翻訳された歌詞とをくらべると、内容は大分違っているようです。
