イングランドのキャロル
イギリスには、クリスマスの１２日のある日、大きな盃になみなみとお酒を注ぎ、来る年の豊作を祈る「ワッセリング」という行事がありました。これは、元々は果樹園から果樹園へ列を作って歌いながら歩き、豊かな実を結ぶよう選ばれた木に特別ブレンドしたお酒をふりかける習慣から起こりました。
お酒は、エールというイギリス独特のビールに、香料や果実やタマゴなどを混ぜたものがよく使われました。この行事が次第に大勢が集まって楽しく酒宴を開く風習に変化していったと言われています。
この底抜けに陽気な歌は、そのワッセリングの酒宴を描写したものです。裕福な郷紳達は、きっとこんなキャロルを歌いながら、皆の健康と新年の幸せを願って、お酒を飲み、冗談を言い合って、楽しい時間を過ごしたのでしょう。このキャロルは旋律もとても美しく、楽しい行事の賑わいが今でも聞こえてくるような気がします。
歌詞に突拍子もない部分が出てきますね。「頬に乾杯」だの「右目に乾杯」だの。でも、これはすべて言葉遊びです。声に出して読むと、すべて２行ずつ「韻」を踏んでいるのがわかります。歌詞が「韻」を踏むと、歌いやすくなり、おまけにとても愉快な気分になれます。お酒の席で大笑いしながらこの歌を歌っている様子が目に浮かぶようです。
ちなみに、ワッセリングのもう一つの特徴だった「キャロルを歌いながら歩く」という風習は次第に家々をキャロルを歌って訪ね歩く「ウエイツ」という行事に溶け込んで行きます。この様子は、もう一つのワッセリングの歌に描写されています。
