[Our Editor]Welcome to Jungle Echoes #8.

C. Hoppe wrote :"I hope my achievements in life shall be these : That I will have fought for what was right and fair, that I will have risked for that which mattered, that I will have given help to those who were in need... That I will have left the earth a better place for what I've done and who I've been." I can think of no better way of introducing Jungle Echoes, except, perhaps, for the addition of Love,... ah... Love !

But back to Jungle Echoes #8 ! In Headlines, we examine the Amadou Diallo incident in NYC and analyze the growing fear and distrust of minorities towards the law enforcers. This situation can, after all, only be detrimental to all. In 1998, Akira Kurosawa, one of the world's greatest film directors, passed away to that great silver screen in the sky. Images offers an article on his work and life. From Japan to South Africa with Hugh Masekela for a break from our Jazz Discographies series. Indeed, Masekela seems a perfect bridge between African music and Jazz. Another installment on our trying to understand the past and its consequences on the present is in Words, with some of the poetry written by slaves and that of their descendants of the Harlem Renaissance. I am a faithful Ignacio Ramonet reader. The editor of Le Monde Diplomatique is a humanist, a believer in the potential greatness of being and a passionate advocate of justice. We have chosen to preproduce his January 1999 editorial, Towards A New Century, in Society. Of course, Humor and Open Forum offer the usual mix of reader-contributed-and-Net-found wit (with the inclusion of a cartoon) and comments.

Warning : you have probably noticed our fondness for ideas expressed in well-crafted words. Each of our sections is now introduced by such words, in the form of a quote.

Enjoy Jungle Echoes #8 !
