Before You Get Started:

There are lots of wonderful books that can help with creating painted furniture. I have a large library of books, some are even available in a craft store near you. Others can be ordered online at Amazon.com or you can browse through your favorite local book stores. Some of my favorites are: Painted Furniture by Diane M. Weaver, Painting and Decortating Furniture by Sheila McGraw and Scandivanian Painted Furniture by Jocasta Innes. I always carry a small sketch pad with me because good design is everywhere. I tend to like strong, geometric and whimical designs. Let your imagination run wild and if you see something that you like, sketch it or take a photo.

First you must sand and fill in any cracks and dents before priming your piece of furniture. Priming is essential, as well as, sanding afterwards. I use Kilz as a primer but remember to do so in a well ventilated room. The primer covers up any previous stain or designs, preventing bleed through. This leaves the piece you are working on ready for your designs.

Basic Supplies:

All the major craft stores carry a full line of acrylic paints. I like Aleene's paints best of all because they have a wide color range and are good quality. However, Delta and others work just as well. I usually mix colors together for a custom shade, so buy extra white and do thin the paint with water before applying. Remember that lighter colors tend to need more than one coat. Brushes, too, are availabe widely. You will need an assortment of brushes, rounds or pointed rounds, flats, liners, filberts, and fans. Brushes come in a wide variety of materials. Just buy the best brushes that you can afford, AND, take care of them, cleaning them with soap and water after each use. There is one excellent mail order company that has EVERYTHING!!! Call 1-800-447-8192 for a catalog from Dick Blick Art Materials. You can fax them also.
