Little Yin Yang

The Way of the Chün Tzu

Returning to basics again and again is essential for progress along any path, be it sports, the culinary arts, music... anything... The practice of consulting the Yijing and relating its fundamental principles to the kitchen sink of our everyday life is a lifelong discipline. This is the path of the Junzi.

Kumoyama Yijing Workshops provide a space for beginning or refining the exploration of our relationship to livelihood, family, and self-cultivation through developing an understanding of and appreciation for the Yijing and its straight-forward expressions of cyclical non-immutability, its messages of hope and warning, its respect for natural order, and its sense of social justice.

The first step on the Path of the Junzi is the establishment of a combined foundation of simple, formless sitting and movement meditation. The workshops base this on a balance of Taoist and Ch'an tradition. This provides the necessary openess for continued practical study in Yijing basics and the application of its practical truths.

The Yijing Today

Unlike traditional oracles in most cultures, 20th century practitioners of the divinatory arts maintain a unique approach towards this and other classic forms: they learn and work alone, primarily from books. Approached outside of tradition, in solitude, there is much room for misconception and misuse, despite our very best intentions.

Kumoyama Yijing Workshops explore recent historical and philological insights into the hitherto misty traditions of the Yijing, approaching the basic text of the Book of Change straighforwardly, placing it firmly in the 21st Century, sans rigid Eastern or Western moralistic interpretations, including those of Confucionism, 60's idealism, or questionable New Age conjecture.
